The Integrated Manufacturing System Laboratory (SIMAN) of the Industrial Engineering Study Program, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) once again held SIMAN CORNER. The event was held in order to provide a space for discussion with 6th semester students and above related to the topic of Final Project in the field of Production Systems. The activity on (14/6) was held at Smart Class Lab SIMAN with the theme “FGD: Research topics in Production Engineering & Supply Chain Management”. The speakers are Ir. Muhammad Ridwan Andi Purnomo, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM., Suci Miranda, S.T., M.Sc., and Ir. Abdullah ‘Azzam, S.T., M.T., IPM.

Ir. Muhammad Ridwan Andi Purnomo, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM, delivered the keynote speech on Intelligent Supply Chain System. Intelligent Supply Chain System is a concept that integrates advanced technology, such as Artificial Intelligent (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) to optimize every aspect of the supply chain. The next topic was Sustainable Supply Chain Management in Small and Medium Industries (SMI) by Suci Miranda, S.T., M.Sc. She gave research recommendations, such as the application of 5S in SMEs using Critical Success Factor, determination of standard time, and many other brilliant topics.

Furthermore, Abdullah ‘Azzam, S.T., M.T., IPM, explained about Product Development. He started his session by explaining the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method. The implementation of this product development must also be in accordance with consumer preferences. In addition, he also conveyed how the right stages in developing a product. Not to forget, he gave varied ideas if you want to take a topic about Product Development.

Afterward, there was a discussion session with the students who attended regarding the final project topics that might have been thought of. Anggun, one of the students who participated in the activity stated, “I think the event is very helpful for students, especially final semester students. There was an overview of what final project topics to take and what methods to use. Then there is also information about projects that can be used for TA, that helps too.” she said.

Industrial Engineering Study Program, Universitas Islam Indonesia held a public lecture again with the theme  “Occupational Safety Management System” on (15/6). The speaker who presented the material at the event was Azjar Jhon Raghozt who is the PJK3 of PT Mawi Sarana Samawi. The OHS Management System functions to create a safe, efficient and productive workplace. This activity was carried out online in order to deepen knowledge about how to implement OHS Management System. A total of 150 participants attended the Zoom Meeting on the morning agenda. Then, Chancard Basumerda, S.T., M.Sc., as the moderator briefly introduced the profiles of the speakers.

Mr. Azjar as the speaker started the session by unifying perceptions about the objectives of implementing OHS. There are 2 main objectives, namely preventing occupational accidents and occupational diseases and ensuring and protecting human resources and the environment.  In addition, he also explained about the company’s obligations in applying OHS Management System. “Well, in implementing OHS Management System, friends are required to implement the establishment of OHS policy, OHS planning, OHS implementation, monitor and review for improvement.” he said.

Furthermore, the Occupational Safety Management System is a company management system in order to control risks associated with work activities. He also explained the stages of OHS Management System implementation starting from stating commitment, establishing OHS Management System methods with third parties, to follow-up of the applicable implementation. Companies must also have competent human resources and adequate infrastructure to achieve optimal OHS Management System.

Afterward, there was a question-and-answer session to conclude the public lecture agenda that morning. One of the participants, Andi, asked about strategies that can be applied so that the socialization of OHS can run effectively for company employees. “Regarding the socialization of OHS Management System, it depends on company management. Well, related to socialization, it can be in safety meetings, special events can be held for socialization. Or in safety meetings, safety induction, there are posters that go into OHS communication. So, there are many ways to socialize, yes, friends.” he replied.

Magang/ Internship

Two UII Industrial Engineering students have just completed an internship program at PT Yamaha Electronic Manufacturing Indonesia (YEMI), one of the companies that collaborates with UII Industrial Engineering. They are Rona Sutra Dewangga Dyah Utami and Azzahra Tiffany Rachmad. The series of internship programs ended with a monitoring session where students presented the results of their projects in front of mentors, managers, and supervisors.

The internship lasted for 3 months, starting from March 12 – June 12 at PT YEMI located in Pasuruan, East Java. Before starting the internship, they prepared themselves by preparing all the necessary files and looking for as many references as possible. “Since the collaboration with YEMI was the first time, we had to be active in finding references. In addition, we made several activity targets to be achieved during the internship,” said Tiffany.

During their internship, they were involved in various important activities in the company. “It just so happened that my and Tiffany’s last CVs were related to SAP ERP as ERP Lab. assistants, so we were placed in the Production Control Department and Procurement Department. There we had the opportunity to dive directly into all transactions in the company by applying internal systems and SAP,” said Rona. In addition, they were also assigned to look for improvements (kaizen) both technically and non-technically, the results of which they will present at the end of the activity. Rona and Tiffany emphasized that the knowledge they gained during college was very helpful in undergoing internships, especially SCM, ERP, PPIC, and Programming Logic courses.

Despite gaining a lot of valuable experience, they also faced some challenges during their internship. They need to make adjustments to the new environment, especially since Yamaha is known as a company with high discipline. In addition, there are many technical languages that have never been learned in lectures, as well as different implementations from lecture theories to the reality in the field.

Rona feels very grateful to be able to participate in this internship program. “Even though we were placed in the eastern region which was the first batch there, the knowledge gained was really amazing. We can dive into the office according to our passion, it is more challenging, but the experience gained is worth it.” Tiffany added, “In general, everything is good, but there are some things that are unique to YEMI, such as the implementation of 5S, kaizen, corei, and horenso. Also, the working environment at YEMI is very positive. They collaborate with each other to achieve a common goal.”

For other students who are interested in joining the internship program, Rona gave some messages and tips. First, make sure you have a company, passion, and career goal in mind as early as possible. Second, find out as much information as possible about the company offered by the program. Third, prepare all the requirements and files needed. Finally, prepare mentally to be ready if you are placed in a different company. Tiffany added, “prepare your CV well and show your best version during the interview, starting from your attitude and language arrangement in answering questions.”

Through this internship program, Rona and Tiffany not only gained valuable work experience, but were also able to apply academic knowledge in real situations, which will certainly be a valuable provision in their future career journey.

Kuliah Tamu/ Guest Lecture Colorant Industry

Industrial Engineering UII held a guest lecture on Friday (14/6). The activity took place online with the theme “Safe Materials For Packaging In Colorant Industry”. A total of 160 students who took the Chemistry of Materials course attended the event in the morning.

Jantung Hilmy as the MC opened the guest lecture by reading the schedule of the event. He then gave a little introduction by reading the CV of the speaker, Daniar Rianawati S.T. She is the Purchasing Department Head of PT DIC Astra Chemicals. Before getting into the presentation of the material, Daniar first showed the Company Profile video of PT DIC Astra Chemicals.

“Our company is a manufacturer of coloring materials, such as for plastics, textiles, and other applications, all from us. So, basically, where there is color, there is PT DIC Astra,” she said.

Colorant and Packaging

Colorant is a substance that is added to change the color of a material or surface. Based on its form, colorant is categorized into five types, which are dry color, liquid color, paste dispersion, masterbatch, and compounded color. In general, color consists of three main materials, including pigments, resins, and additives.

Packaging is the science, art, and technology to wrap or protect a product in the process of distribution, storage, sale, and use. “Packaging design is not just as simple as wrapping, but also considers various aspects, such as function, aesthetics, and needs. The choice of material is one that needs to be carefully considered.”

“How do we know safe materials in the colorant industry? We must choose materials that do not contain prohibited ingredients. In addition, ensure that the dosage limitation is in accordance with regulations,” she explained. First, before approving the material, check the laboratory test results, especially related to the application you want to use. Second, check the actual content regularly because the quality of each batch may change. Furthermore, for some safe pigments, among others are Non/Selected Azo Pigment, Non Diarylide Pigment, and Non Heavy Metal Pigment.

After the presentation, Daniar held an interactive quiz session. Students who scored the highest points were rewarded with an e-wallet balance from her. Finally, the guest lecture was completed with a discussion and Q&A session.

On Friday (07/06), Industrial Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Industrial Technology, Universitas Islam Indonesia held an industrial visit to Sukoharjo and Tawamangu, Central Java. This visit was in the form of Company and Educational Visit and was attended by around 250 Industrial Engineering students batch of 2022. Students visited two companies, namely PT Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk (PT. Sritex) which focuses on integrated textile production and Rumah Atsiri Indonesia which produces essential oils.

This industrial visit was accompanied by several supervisors, including Ir. Hartomo, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN.Eng, Yuli Agusti Rochman, S.T., M.Eng, Dr. Dwi Adi Purnama, S.T, Putri Dwi Annisa, S.T., M.Sc, Sayyidah Maulidatul Afraah, S.T., M.T, and Zelania In Haryanto, S.T., M.T.

Company Visit to PT. Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk

On the first visit to PT. Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk (PT. Sritex), participants listened to an explanation of the production system from the yarn spinning process to finished garments and employee empowerment delivered by Sugi from the Human Resource Department (HRD) of PT. Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk (PT. Sritex) Sukoharjo branch. Then, there was a question and answer session and a direct visit to the clothing production process.

In his speech, Sugi expressed his hope, “It is a challenge for intellectual candidates, how to maintain the Indonesian manufacturing industry to exist. Don’t let Bangladesh slip, then Cambodia will slip again. Well, this is the challenge for all of you”.

Hartomo, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN.Eng., as a representative of UII, also said that the purpose of this industrial visit is as a practical learning about manufacturing activities and quality control, so that students can explore the science of the manufacturing industry.

Furthermore, during the visit to Rumah Atsiri Indonesia, participants were divided into small groups with the assistance of guides from Rumah Atsiri. Participants were introduced to various types of aromatherapy plants, learned the history of Rumah Atsiri Indonesia, and learned about the aroma oil refining process.

In the mentoring, participants were not only introduced to the types of plants cultivated but were also invited to smell the aroma of the plants to try tasting certain plants. Then, participants were also introduced to the origin of the development of essential oils in world civilization.

From this educational visit, participants gained a lot of insight related to the origin of essential oils, uses, refining processes, as well as products that can be produced from aromatic plants.

The Company & Educational Visit program went smoothly, and participants were satisfied and gained more insight into the manufacturing industry and the essential oil industry.

Industrial Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Industrial Technology, Universitas Islam Indonesia held a public lecture on (8/6). The event was held in order to explore the knowledge of benefit cost analysis in the implementation of OSH. A total of 200 students who took Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) courses attended the event which took place via Zoom Meeting. The event with the theme “Cost Benefit Analysis of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Implementation” invited a resource person, namely Azjar Jhon Raghozt who is the PJK3 of PT Mawi Sarana Samawi with moderator Atyanti Dyah Prabaswari, S.T., M.Sc.

The resource person started the material session by re-discussing the definition of K3. Furthermore, he explained what the costs are when implementing OSH in a company. Examples of OHS implementation costs include the cost of preparing an Occupational Safety & Health plan, the cost of purchasing Work Protective Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and the cost of installing OHS signs. “Personal Protective Equipment includes safety helmets, eye protection, SCBA for diving activities, yes. There are ear plugs and ear muffs, respiratory protection, gloves, safety shoes, full body harness. There is a life vest, there is a safety vest, and there is an apron or shirt, yes, friends. That is one of the cost analyses that we have to budget for as well.” he said.

Then, he also explained that, “When we don’t implement OHS, there are some costs that are really very detrimental to the company, friends. Maybe the company only knows, oh, there is an accident, that’s it, there is already insurance. Whereas in the iceberg theory if we don’t analyze the third cost, there really is a huge loss even to the closure of the company.” he explained. In general, the only visible costs are accident and illness costs. In reality, there are many other costs that can cause damage, delays, and time losses if companies do not budget for OHS costs. Furthermore, there was a question and answer session to conclude the public lecture that morning.

Monthly Webinar 2 tentang Social Commerce oleh Agus Mansur

National Monthly Webinar of Industrial Engineering UII was held for the second time. The event on Friday (7/6) raised the theme “Social Commerce: A New Era For Digital-Based Business and Supply Chain Management Challenges”. The activity took place online via Zoom Meeting and was attended by 92 participants.

Akmal Faiq as the MC opened the afternoon activity by reciting basmalah and reading the program schedule. Then, Didin Dwi Novianto, S.T., M.LSCM, as the moderator gave a little introduction by reading the CVs of the speakers. 

“Social commerce has changed the conventional paradigm of online shopping, people are not only passive consumers but also become part of the sales process by interacting actively,” he said as an opening.

Furthermore, the event entered the main session, which is the delivery of material by Dr. Ir. Agus Mansur, S.T., M.Eng.Sc IPU, Vice Dean for Resources of FTI UII. Social commerce itself has two main keywords, namely social interactions and user contributions. These two things distinguish social commerce from e-commerce. Social media is a platform that can make customers more “close” to the product. This is done through their features, such as comments, reviews, recommendations, and content sharing. In addition, online store features such as “Buy Now” and ads that appear will match the preferences of each customer.

The rise of social commerce certainly has an impact on the supply chain and product distribution. “There could be a lot of interest in social commerce, but not being able to meet the demand will be a boomerang,” he explained. Therefore, there are several things that need to be considered, namely how demand fluctuates from the influence of positive or negative comments on social media and the supply chain must have agile and responsive capabilities.

After the presentation, the moderator led a discussion and Q&A session with the participants. Finally, the event was finalized with a group photo as documentation.

Sosialisasi

In order to invite students to explore activities during college, Industrial Engineering UII held a socialization of student activities outside the campus. This agenda took place on (4/6) online through Zoom Meeting.

Putri Dwi Annisa, S.T., M.Sc. opened and guided the afternoon event as MC. Afterwards, there were remarks from the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program, Annisa Uswatun Khasanah, S.T., M.Sc.

“There are many paths to graduation. The 144 credits graduation requirement can not only be achieved through campus study, but also through several activities, such as internships, independent studies, student exchanges, and others,” she said.

She revealed that the study program provides opportunities and greatly facilitates students who are interested in participating in various programs. Some of the programs that the study program recommends include internships, student exchanges, entrepreneurial activities, and independent studies. However, keep in mind that there are also some requirements that students must fulfill first. She explained some of these in general. All of these requirements, flow, conversion system, and other important information are listed in the UII Industrial Engineering MBKM Guidebook.

Furthermore, the socialization went into an internship explanation session by Danang Setiawan, S.T., M.T.. He explained various internship opportunities that can be followed by students, starting from MBKM, study program partner internships, and magenta. Next, there was a competition explanation session by Dr. Dwi Adi Purnama, S.T. and Putri Dwi Annisa, S.T., M.Sc. They informed various competitions within the scope of Industrial Engineering that are interesting for students to participate in, whether they are ongoing or will take place. The competitions include PKM, PMC, Gemastik, various product design competitions, and others. Along with the delivery of information, students who were troubled or confused asked their questions directly.

A group of UII Industrial Engineering students made achievements in the Administratio Creative Writing Competition 2024. The competition themed “Ideas with Action to Face the Future” is an annual event of the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya. The competition took place on (8-31/5) and was attended by active students throughout Indonesia.

The team consists of Zahid Anugrah Muzaffar Rana, Inggil Tahta Haritza, Rangga Pamungkas Putradharma, and Azhar Anargya Aryasatya. They are all UII Industrial Engineering students class of 2022. The award they won was the 1st Winner in the Opinion Competition branch with the essay “SAFETO: Artificial Intelligence-Based Data Storage Security Improvement Solution Through Three Integrated Processes”.

In this competition, they were challenged to find solutions to problems arising from the development of Artificial Intelligence as data storage. The case study they had to solve was about the data leak experienced by Bank Syariah Indonesia. The competition takes place online, then the solutions they submit will be collected to be assessed by the judges regarding originality, content suitability, essay quality, and others.

Zahid shared the competition process they went through, from conducting in-depth research on the problem to gathering information from various international journals. Not only that, as preparation, they have also conducted various research related to Artificial Intelligence even before their case study was announced in the Technical Meeting. Furthermore, based on the case study research that had been done, they proposed a solution in the form of increasing data storage security by utilizing Artificial Intelligence based on three integrated processes, starting from pre-processing, on-going, and post-processing.

“It’s really exciting because the competition is related to Artificial Intelligence which is currently being widely discussed by the public,” they said. They also advised students who want to take part in similar competitions to remain enthusiastic and never stop trying, and pray to Allah SWT to always be given ease or smoothness. The spirit to always try and seek new experiences is the key to success in every competition.

Akmal Faiq Fadhillah Hidayat, one of Industrial Engineering UII students won the twibbon design competition at La Fête 2024. La Fête 2024 is one of the annual events to commemorate the anniversary of the French Language Education Student Association (HIPER) FBSB UNY. The 3rd place winner in the national twibbon competition received an award in the form of a certificate and coaching money. The event which took place on (31/05) was attended by all high school / vocational school students, university students and the general public in Indonesia with the theme “Une Odyssée Fantastique : A journey into wonder”. This success is clear evidence that UII Industrial Engineering students also excel in demonstrating creativity and innovation.

Akmal said that the road to victory in the twibbon competition began with preparing concepts related to adventure, fantasy, and magic. Therefore, it took a strong effort to explore his imagination deeply. After that, he started playing around with various editing applications to create stunning visuals. Nonetheless, Akmal still found some improvements to make his work even more stunning.

A supportive friendship environment helped Akmal during the competition process. There were several friends whom he asked to give suggestions on the design so that they could be taken into consideration. Meanwhile, many twists and turns occurred during the twibbon design competition process. However, this did not discourage him. He quickly imagined how to continue the design according to the previous concept. “The design was lost when there was a revision of the theme writing, but Alhamdulillah it was backed up, so the design was not completely lost,” he said.

The 2023 student admitted that he was grateful for the myriad of benefits from participating in the twibbon design competition. “I am very happy because it was the first time I won a competition while studying at UII, made new friends at UNY, improved my editing skills, and many more,” he said. He also advised other students who might want to follow in his footsteps, “Be confident in what you have done and don’t get hung up on the negative words of others.” he said.
